Our Mission and Legacy

As word weavers, the West Virginia Storytelling Guild is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich tradition of oral storytelling. Voices of Our Community

“The West Virginia Storytelling Guild (WVSG) is our own curated collection of gifted entertainers. Each performer we’ve used offers wit, heart and authentic magic in their programs. Their ability to tell a tale is always honed to let their unique styles and personalities shine through. The common thread for every yarn spun? A devotion to the craft of oral storytelling. It is alive and making some happy noise amongst the WVSG.”

Catherine Feryok, Technical Services, Reference and Programming Librarian, Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library

“I have benefitted so much from the workshops and retreats offered by the Storytelling guild. Plus, so many members have been so gracious with their  advice and coaching. As a solo artist,  I so appreciate being part of a community.”

Fran Kirk, Guild Member

“The West Virginia Storytelling Guild has brought amazing storytellers to all three branches of our library system. Not only do they bring stories to life, but they keep us in touch with our heritage in a unique way. Anyone can read a book, but the Storytelling Guild enchants our patrons with tales that they may have never heard before. Also, for patrons that may not necessarily enjoy reading, this is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the literature from the mountain state’s past in a different manner.”

Megan Lake, Programming Librarian,  Mannington Public Library; Julie Mike, Branch Manager, Fairview

“The West Virginia Storytelling Guild members have welcomed this Buckeye gal with open arms. This wonderful Guild has provided me with the opportunities to attend workshops, present workshops, share stories with young people and multigenerational audiences in a variety of settings.”

Teri Lott, Professional Storyteller, Puppeteer, and Author

The Frank and Jane Gabor West Virginia Folklife Center at Fairmont State University cherishes its longstanding partnership with the West Virginia Storytelling Guild. When we host concerts and holiday celebrations put on by the Guild, we see the world of storytelling open up to students and and community members. When the Guild has their retreats and meetings here, we watch as folks deepen their relationship to this traditional art form, and deepen their relationships with each other.”
